What Is Cyber Monday?

Cyber Monday occurs each year during the Christmas shopping season. Retailers created the event to encourage online shopping. The National Retail Federation (NRF) coined the name in 2005, and it’s now an international concept.

Cyber Monday is the online version of Black Friday. It gives small business websites a way to compete with the large chain stores. The NRF predicts a record 166.3 million shoppers during Thanksgiving weekend. Almost 40 percent will shop online.

When Is Cyber Monday?

Cyber Monday is the Monday after Thanksgiving. It’s one of several unofficial “holidays” that kick off the Christmas shopping season. This year, November 28 is Cyber Monday.

Black Friday is the oldest and more established of the retail holidays. Cyber Monday and Small Business Saturday, are more recent additions. Giving Tuesday, a charitable giving campaign, rounds out the group.

Why Is It Called Cyber Monday?

2005 saw the first use of the term Cyber Monday. But the word cyber – especially as a prefix – saw much earlier usage in computer culture. Norbert Wiener, an American mathematician, introduced Cybernetics in 1940.

In 1961, The Wall Street Journal compared the Cybertron to conventional computers. Also in the sixties, fans of the Doctor Who television show heard words such as cybermen and cyborgs. {Delight a fan with this TARDIS Christmas ornament.}

In recent years, the main use of cyber has related to the internet. North American author William Gibson coined the word cyberspace in the 1982 story “Burning Chrome.” He used it again in his 1984 novel Neuromancer.

Other cyber words in frequent use are:

  • cyberattack
  • cyberbully
  • cybercafe
  • cyberpet
  • cyberpunk
  • cybersecurity
  • cyberterrorism
  • cyberwarfare

Cyber Monday has been around for almost 20 years. It beats Black Friday for the deepest discounts, so it’s not going away anytime soon. But as technologies change, the way we use cyber might change. We’ll see.

How Can It Save You Money?

Black Friday or Cyber Monday? The choice is yours. If you like shopping in stores, Black Friday might be your thing. But you’ll have to fight long lines and crowded aisles for the best deals.

If you’re looking for some bargains but want to shop online, Cyber Monday is for you. But remember, you must make delivery arrangements when you shop online. With that said, Cyber Monday can save you money if you stick to your lists and your budget.

To save money on Cyber Monday, use Black Friday prices as a benchmark. Many products have better discounts after Thanksgiving weekend. For example: name brand televisions, laptop computers, gaming systems, home goods, and apparel.

For even bigger deals, start a live chat session and ask the operator for a coupon code. Clear your shopping cart before Cyber Monday and you might trigger a coupon by email. And don’t forget to stack coupons to maximize your savings.

Start Cyber Monday by shopping at stores that offer free shipping. For example, Amazon Prime members get free shipping on all orders. Not a member yet? Start your free 30-day trial today.
