4 Ways to Revitalize Your Bedding
Spring cleaning is more than decluttering your home or giving it a good scrub. It’s also “a great time to do a lot of laundry,” wrote Jolie Kerr, author of the syndicated column Ask a Clean Person.
“A lot of laundry” includes your bedding.
I’ve dressed our bedroom with Biltmore bedding from Belk. Some pieces have the dreaded “dry-clean only” tag – and I’m not brave enough to wash those pieces at home! But most of my bedding is machine washable. It’s likely that yours is, too.
So this month, while you’re in spring cleaning mode, take time to launder your bedding. Especially if you have pets. Here are four simple ways to revitalize your bedding for spring.

1. Wash Your Sheets and Pillowcases
You spend more time wrapped in your bed sheets than your clothes. Oil from your hair and face can leave a lasting impression on your sheets and pillowcases. So wash those bed linens often to remove the buildup of oil, sweat, skin flakes, dust, and debris.
A weekly hot water wash (130 to 150 degrees Fahrenheit) is a good rule of thumb. It’s the place to start if you tend to put off washing the sheets. Pre-treat visible stains before you throw the sheets in the washer.
A hot dryer will kill most germs found on sheets and pillowcases. Hanging your sheets on a clothesline in the sun has almost the same effect. Most people don’t iron their sheets anymore, but if you do, line drying can save you some time.

2. Wash Your Blankets and Pillows
Do you already wash your sheets at least once a week? What about your other bedding? When was the last time you washed your pillows, shams, dust ruffle, mattress pad, and blankets?
These items have practical and decorative uses. But after a long winter, it’s likely they need some revitalizing for spring.
Most bedding can go right into the washer – even feather pillows, said Kerr. But it’s a good idea to check care instructions first to see if something needs hand washing. Afterwards, fluff your bedding in the dryer or hang it on a clothesline to dry in the sun.
3. Air Out Your Mattress
After you start a wash cycle, tend to your bed itself. First, air out the mattress and boxspring – either outside, or near an open window. Vacuum them to remove dust mites, then vacuum the floor under your bed.
Treat stains with the professional-strength solution that came with your mattress. Or use a pet stain remover. Neutralize bad odors with a spritz of white vinegar.
Let the mattress dry completely to prevent mold and mildew from forming. Then, return it to the bed frame and dress it with clean bedding.
4. Store Your Winter Bedding
Take special care as you store your winter bedding for the next cold spell. Tuck scented dryer sheets in the folds of your bedding before storing it away. This adds freshness to your flannel sheets, blankets, bedspreads, and other bed linens.
