Generous Servings – Ice Cream, Generosity, and the Grace of God

Generous Servings - Of Ice Cream, Generosity, and the Grace of God

Who likes ice cream? I’m raising my hand. Are you? The International Dairy Foods Association said nine in ten Americans enjoy this treat. We like it so much, in fact, we gave it a month of honor.

To celebrate National Ice Cream Month, we’ll shine a light on generous servings. We’ll talk about ice cream, generosity, and God’s grace. So grab a bowl, dish up your favorite flavor, and let’s dive in.

National Ice Cream Month

July is National Ice Cream Month, and the third Sunday of July – today – is National Ice Cream Day. The celebrations originated in 1984, with joint resolutions in the United States Congress.

Senator Walter Dee Huddleston of Kentucky sponsored the Senate resolution. Congressman Kika de la Garza of Texas sponsored the House resolution. And President Ronald Reagan kicked off the national bash with a Presidential Proclamation.

Reagan described ice cream as a nutritious and wholesome food for people of all ages. It enjoys a reputation as “the perfect dessert and snack food.”

Ice cream is important to the economic well-being of America’s dairy industry. It plays a huge role in summer dessert dishes and family get-togethers. What’s more, it can even improve your sleep!

Reagan encouraged Americans to observe Ice Cream Month with “appropriate ceremonies and activities.” There’s no better time than now to celebrate this frozen delight. So grab your bowl and spoon, and let’s eat ice cream!

Generous Servings of Ice Cream

Now for the question you knew was coming: What is your favorite ice cream flavor? My current fave (it changes all the time) is Denali Moose Tracks. I love the creamy blend of ice cream, fudge swirls, and peanut butter cups.

Publix sells Moose Tracks in three flavors: vanilla, chocolate, and mint. But Denali’s lineup has twelve flavors: brownie, cherry, cookie dough, and more. So many choices!

Mitch and I live a low-carb lifestyle, so our treats are usually sugar free. But it’s hard to pass up ice cream, and we indulge on special occasions.

We use a standard scoop like this one to serve the creamy confection. It’s a simple gadget with a century-old design, but it does the job well.

Amazon’s choice has a more modern style, with pretty colors to boot. The sturdy tool is “the last ice cream scoop you’ll need.” Ready to buy?

The right scoop is essential for a well-rounded serving of ice cream. Most ice cream parlors use different sized scoops based on the dessert type and serving size.

The best shops give their customers generous scoops of ice cream. Others are fair with their portions, while some are downright stingy!

Unlike the stingy ice cream parlors, God doesn’t scrimp on blessings. In fact, He showers us with blessing upon blessing, grace upon grace (John 1:16). Poured out, piled up, and heaped upon us.

God is liberal with his blessings so we will have everything we need to serve Him and His kingdom (2 Corinthians 9:8). He blesses us so we can bless others. Now that’s something to celebrate!

The Generous Grace of God

“The will of God is the wellspring of all spiritual blessings,” said Charles Stanley (Into His Presence). “You draw your peace, strength, joy, and security from the sufficiency of God’s generous grace.”

In a blog article in The Christian Post, Stanley wrote about God’s grace. He compared scoops of ice cream to servings of generosity, and this analogy inspired my post.

“Some Christians understand God’s principles and give willingly and liberally,” wrote Stanley. They use their blessings to bless the people God puts in their path – family, friends, even strangers.

Other Christians are fair in their giving, Stanley said. They are faithful to share an “adequate” amount of physical or intangible blessings.

Then there are selfish and stagnant Christians who are stingy with their giving. They isolate themselves, clasp their blessings, and neglect to give anything to others.

What kind of giver are YOU?

Wrapping It Up

Generosity – whether it’s scoops of ice cream or servings of grace – is more than amount, size, or numbers. Giving is really a heart issue, and attitude is everything.

Our motive for giving should come from a heart of love for God and others. We should view our ability to give as a pleasure and a blessing. God loves a cheerful giver, after all (2 Corinthians 9:7) – and He blesses generous people (Luke 6:38).

God blesses us so we can bless others. And even when we seem to have little to give, we can be gracious and giving. When we trust God to meet ALL our needs (Philippians 4:19), we are free to share generous servings with others. ◻️
