Patriotic Popsicles: A Recipe to Try This Fourth of July

Patriotic popsicles are fun to eat on a summer afternoon. Healthy ingredients make them a good breakfast choice, too. And they’re easy-to-make treats for the Fourth of July.

Frozen treats in patriotic colors are yummy any day or season. But they’re perfect for days that call for some red, white, and blue. Memorial Day, Flag Day, Independence Day, Veterans Day. Are you ready to show your holiday colors?

Let’s head to the kitchen and have some fun.

Patriotic Popsicles for July

I grew up eating ice pops – homemade treats and the store-bought kind. Even now, there’s a box of Popsicles® in the freezer. Mitch and I like the sugar-free tropical flavors. Hawaiian pineapple. Tropical orange. Caribbean fruit punch.

This week, I thought it might be fun to make some frozen treats for my family. Patriotic popsicles have two healthy ingredients: yogurt and berries. And they’re so easy to make.

But first, a confession: I don’t like yogurt! Well, not the kind they serve in a cup. Mitch isn’t a fan, either. But my stepson eats it with his breakfast. And we ALL like frozen yogurt.

My guys like berries, too – blueberries, dewberries, blackberries, raspberries, strawberries. Before Mitch retired, I packed berries in his lunchbox every day. So these patriotic popsicles should be a winner for the Smiths!

Yogurt and Berry Popsicles

I don’t spend much time in the kitchen these days. But patriotic popsicles are so easy, anyone can make them. They’re a good way to get your kids involved in kitchen activities. They’re a fun holiday activity for the whole family.

There are many variations online for patriotic popsicles. I combed through a few women’s magazines and food blogs, and here’s the recipe I want to try. It takes about 10 minutes of preparation – plus six hours of freezer time – to make six treats.

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups of fresh berries
  • 2 cups of plain or vanilla yogurt
  • 2 to 3 tablespoons of honey
  • 1/4 cup of milk (optional)
  • 3/4 cup of granola (optional)

Instructions

  1. Stir the yogurt and honey in a small bowl. If you use Greek yogurt, thin it with some milk. The mixture should be thick but pourable.
  2. Arrange six popsicle molds on the counter. These stainless steel molds get high marks on Amazon.
  3. Pour a generous spoon of the yogurt mixture into each mold. (You could also use paper cups and craft sticks.)
  4. For some extra crunch, add a scoop of granola to each mold. Then add a spoon or two of fresh berries. Keep layering the yogurt, granola, and berries until all the molds are full.
  5. Gently tap the molds against your counter, or use a popsicle stick to remove air bubbles from the mixture. Then insert a popsicle stick into each mold and freeze for at least six hours.
  6. To release a popsicle, hold the mold under hot running water for a minute. Let the water hit the top and bottom of the mold, as well as the middle. This helps loosen the popsicle without melting it.
  7. Enjoy your healthy, fruity patriotic popsicles!

  • Annette,
Somehow I just discovered your “Savoring Home” website when I clicked onto your Independence Day notice on Facebook. I love it – everything is so beautifully Christian and well done. I’m going to have to go back and read your many earlier posts. I do love the red, white, and blue recipes and thoughts on Independence Day. In many ways your writing reminds me of Edith Schaeffer, who brought such Christian beauty into her family life with Francis Schaeffer. Love, Diana

    • Hi, Diana!

What a beautiful comment. Your kind words mean so much to me – so uplifting and encouraging. Thank you! I love red, white, and blue and I’m glad you do, too.

Every Independence Day, I remember the American Bicentennial celebration your family hosted. The beautiful costumes of period clothing, delicious food, and fun sing-alongs. “Goober Peas!” Everything was so patriotic and memorable!

I’m glad you found my blog, and I hope you enjoy reading some of the articles. Until we chat again, have a wonderful Fourth of July weekend and a great summer.

      Love, Annette
