The History of Flag Day

Americans have celebrated Flag Day for more than a century. The first celebration took place in 1877, on the 100th anniversary of the Flag Resolution.

On June 14, 1777, the Second Continental Congress adopted the flag of the United States. The Flag Resolution described our national flag this way:

“Resolved: that the flag of the United States be made of thirteen stripes, alternate red and white; that the union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field, representing a new Constellation.”

The first recognition of an annual Flag Day likely dates to 1885 and the actions of Bernard J. Cigrand. The Wisconsin school teacher led his students in a birthday celebration for the flag. Then, they repeated the event the following year.

Known as the “Father of Flag Day,” Cigrand was a strong advocate for an annual Flag Day observance. In time, several state governments adopted such an observance.

President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed a countrywide Flag Day in 1916. But it wasn’t until August 3, 1949, that Congress designated June 14 as National Flag Day.

The Forgotten Holiday?

Unlike other patriotic holidays, Flag Day is not a federal holiday. Some states observe it as a state holiday. But it’s at the president’s discretion to proclaim a national observance each year.

Flag Day is sometimes called the “forgotten holiday.” That’s because it often gets lost between Memorial Day and Juneteenth. Still, it’s a National Day worthy of celebration.

Americans celebrate Flag Day with flag ceremonies, parades, picnics, and essay contests. Veterans groups, schools, and the National Flag Day Foundation often sponsor these events.

They aim to preserve the history, traditions, and respect that Old Glory deserves. To help YOU honor the Stars and Stripes, here are 14 Flag Day quotes and sayings.
